The Papers is an upcoming historical drama film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg from a script written by Liz Hannah and Josh Singer and starring Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

A cover-up that spanned four U.S. Presidents pushed the country’s first female newspaper publisher of The Washington Post, Kay Graham (Meryl Streep) and its hard-driving editor, Ben Bradlee(Tom Hanks) to join an unprecedented battle between journalist and government in publishing the Pentagon Papers.

Amy Pascal successfully won a bid in October 2016 for the rights to the film’s screenplay, written by Liz Hannah.[2]

In March 2017, it was announced that Steven Spielberg was in negotiations to direct and produce the project, with Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep in talks for the roles of Ben Bradlee and Kay Graham, respectively.[3] The cast includes Alison Brie, Carrie Coon, David Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Tracy Letts, Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, Jesse Plemons, Matthew Rhys, Michael Stuhlbarg, Bradley Whitford, and Zach Woods.[4] The film began production in New York on May 30, 2017.[5]

The Papers will receive a limited release on December 22, 2017, followed by a wide release on January 12, 2018.[6]

In July 2017, it was announced that Spielberg’s regular collaborator John Williams will be composing the film’s score. Williams was originally attached to write the music for Spielberg’s Ready Player One, but due to both films having similar post-production schedules, Williams chose to work on this project instead while Alan Silvestri was hired to take over scoring duties for the latter. The Papers marks the 28th collaboration between Williams and Spielberg.[7]

Various New York Times figures who were associated with the Pentagon Papers case, including James Greenfield, James Goodale, Allan Siegal and Max Frankel, have objected to The Papers because it does not emphasize the Times role in breaking the story.[8]
