Wonderstruck is a 2017 American drama film directed by Todd Haynes. The film is based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Brian Selznick, who adapted the novel into a screenplay. The film stars Oakes Fegley, Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams and Millicent Simmonds.

The film premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2017, and competed for the Palme d’Or. It is scheduled to have a limited release in the United States on October 20, 2017, by Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions.

Synopsis

The film takes place in both 1927 and 1977. In the earlier time period, Rose (Simmonds) runs away from her New Jersey home to find her idol Lillian Mayhew (Moore). In the later time frame, Ben (Fegley) also runs away to New York after his mother’s death in search of his missing father.[2]

Production

Todd Haynes directed Wonderstruck based on an adapted screenplay by Brian Selznick, who also wrote the novel of the same name. Haynes was involved as director by May 2015 with Christine Vachon producing under her Killer Films banner.[3] In November 2015, Julianne Moore had been cast in the film, with Pamela Koffler and John Sloss joining as producers.[4] In April 2016, Jaden Michael, Cory Michael Smith, Michelle Williams, Oakes Fegley, and Amy Hargreaves joined the cast of the film.[5][6][7][8] In May 2016, James Urbaniak joined the cast.[9] Among those cast was Millicent Simmonds, a deaf actor from Utah. Deadline.com reported, “The 13-year-old Simmonds… will play Rose, whose half of Wonderstruck will be presented as a silent film in both a nod to movie history and an aesthetic designed to capture her perspective. In addition, this section of the narrative will see an unprecedented number of deaf actors in roles that would normally go to hearing actors.”[10]

Principal photography began on May 4, 2016.[11][12][13] Filming took place in Peekskill, New York.[14] Production concluded on July 3, 2016.[15]

Release

Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions will distribute the film.[16] Amazon Studios partnered with Roadside to distribute Wonderstruck in the United States. The film is scheduled to have a limited release in the United States on October 20, 2017 and to have a wider release in mid-November 2017.[2]

Wonderstruck had its world premiere on May 18, 2017 at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.[17][1] It competed for the Palme d’Or in the main competition section.[18][19] It will also screen at the New York Film Festival on October 7, 2017.[20]

Critical reception

Wonderstruck currently holds a 73% approval rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 37 reviews, with a weighted average of 6.7/10.[21] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 74 out of 100, based on 14 critics, indicating “generally favorable reviews”.[22] The film was met with a three minute standing ovation following its premiere at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.[23]

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review writing : “Alive with the magic of pictures and the mysteries of silence, this is an uncommonly grownup film about children, communication, connection and memory.”[24]David Ehrlich of Indiewire.com also gave the film a positive review writing : “A soul-stirring and fiercely uncynical film.”[25]
